Nevertheless, the production always contains pleasures for the eye and ear. Snowflakes fall as Meazza, Penlington and ensemble skate on a fanciful frozen lake. Images run the gamut from Magritte-like blue skies with feathery clouds, to a large, open mouth featuring tongue and teeth, and a mountainous multi-level wedding cake.
Both the staging at the costumes were breathtaking, with striking pieces and simple sets that just told the story and complemented the dancing perfectly. From the monochrome palette of the opening scene, to the cool blues of the frozen lake, to the bubblegum pink of sweetie land, it was pure joy to watch and enjoy.

Really enjoyed seeing Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! on BBC4 over Christmas. I'd seen a traditional version of The Nutcracker in the autumn (my first live ballet), which I really enjoyed, but this was much more my thing. After the initial scenes, in a dingy orphanage, Clara is transported first to a frozen lake and then to Sweetieland, where she tries to follow Liquorice Allsorts, Marshmallow Girls and a salacious Knickerbocker Glory into a party but is repeatedly barred by an Mint Humbug bouncer. 2ff7e9595c
